The view of Abbey Falls
During monsoon, this place is more attracted by greenery all around. The waterfalls is in mid of spice and coffee estate, we need to walk down from parking/road. There are few steps down to reach waterfalls where spice and coffee plantations welcome us with a cool environment.
During British era, this area was a thick jungle, and Abbey Falls was known as Jessy Falls, named after a British officer’s wife. After Independence, the waterfall and its surrounding areas came under the control of the government. Later Mr. Neravanda B.Nanaiah bought the place from the government and converted it into a coffee and spices plantation. Then waterfalls became a tourist spot after developing the surrounding. Now it is the most visited place in Madikeri.
Offseason tourists are allowed to get down till the foot of waterfalls where they can play with water. But on season and monsoon, it will be blocked. Rocks are very slippery on monsoon and water activities will be very risky. Over the years many deaths have been reported at the waterfall. It is advised to stay back and enjoy the view instead of risking of our life. Same happens with the hanging bridge which will take u inside the estate.
You can explore spice and coffee plantations surrounding the waterfall once you cross the hanging bridge. The time we went it was closed, not even handing bridge gate was open. But the view from the hanging bridge is amazing.
There are facilities like washroom and parking available for the tourists. The parking fee is INR 30.
