Around 20% of electricity is from Dams. Karnataka is rich in the hill station, waterfalls, rivers. There are many dams built on famous rivers including Sharavathi, Krishna, Kaveri, Vedavathi, Netravathi, Tunga, Bhadra and many more.
Why Dams are built?
There are many strong reasons why dams are built. They are built for Water Storage, Hydroelectricity Generation, Avoiding Flood, For irrigation, Drinking water and many other reasons.

1. Bhadra Dam
Bhadra Dam (Bhadra Reservoir) is located on the Bhadra River a tributary of Tungabhadra River in Tarikere Taluk, Chikmagalur District, Karnataka. The project was undertaken by the National Water Management Project(NWMP).

The Bhadra River rises in the Western Ghats Aroli hill of Kudremukh range. Dam water benefits for irrigation, drinking water supply and industrial use.
Hydropower was commissioned in 1965 which generates 39.2 MW providing power to towns and villages nearby.
As the Kaveri water issue is increasing nowadays all dams in Karnataka are quite restricted for visitors. Not a problem in this dam, there is a viewpoint to see the entire backwater. Towards the right of the dam, there is a way to the viewpoint. Cars and bikes can be taken to some extent later we have to walk for the viewpoint. The place is well maintained. Once we reach viewpoint we feel like we are seeing an ocean.
2. Vani Vilas Sagar
Vani Vilas Sagar, also known as Mari Kanive which is located in Hiriyur Taluk, Chitradurga District, Karnataka. Vanivilas dam is about 160 km from Bangalore and 40 km from Chitradurga. One among the tourist attractions surrounding Chitradurga. People who visit Vanivilas dam also visit Chitradurga Fort which is 40 km. This is the oldest dam in the state built by the Mysore Maharajas across the river Vedavathi. The place is not crowded all the time, so people visit here can spend some good time.
